STREET FIGHTER X TEKKEN’ ENTERS CROWDED ARENA OF STELLAR FIGHTING GAMES

CHICAGO – It’s an amazing time to be a fight game fan. For years, it seemed like the genre was on life support, waiting for someone to unleash the fatality that put it out of its misery. There seemed to be a distinct lack of creativity in the arcade-based form that once gave us titles like “Mortal Kombat” and “Street Fighter,” games so popular that they even spawned movies. Even those series seemed to flag as the next generation moved on to shooters and even sports games took off. And then something happened. Right now, fighter fans have to choose between “Marvel vs. Capcom 3,” “Soul Calibur V,” the brilliant reboot of “Mortal Kombat,” and, a new-but-old contender, “Street Fighter x Tekken.” Or just play ‘em all.
With the “x” pronounced as “cross,” “Street Fighter x Tekken” copies the basic mold of the hit “Marvel vs. Capcom 3” series (which was a massive success and was just imported to PlayStation Vita) by figuring that if one fan base is nice, two is even nicer. Considering the game was built by Capcom, their guest at the party (“Street Fighter”) gets the basic foundation. This feels more like a Capcom game than a Namco Bandai (the developers of “Tekken”) one, although the player can change the default controls to more accurately mimic the “Tekken” franchise if they choose. Either way, characters from both series along with some surprising new choices have come to kick some ass in cartoonish, ridiculous ways. For the most part, it works.

The “more” approach to “Street Fighter x Tekken” applies to every aspect of the game. The title includes dozens of character from both franchises along with several new, unusual additions (some of the PS3 exclusives) including Pac-Man, Mega Man, and Cole from Sony’s “inFamous.” I must admit that using Cole’s electrifying powers in a fighting game provided a nifty kick but I’m getting a little exhausted by “guest stars” in fighting games like Freddy Krueger, Kratos, Darth Vader, and Ezio (all recent fighters). There’s something goofy about watching a giant Pac-Man in a robot suit fight Cole but it seems like a gimmick that has run its course.

Now, it’s just a minor part of “Street Fighter x Tekken.” You can stick to the classics like Ryu and Asuka if you want. How do they play? Pretty fluidly with a fighting style that, in the standard for most quality current-gen combat games, is easy to learn but hard to master. The default controls include six variations — high/medium/low kicks and punches (but can be changed to a “Tekken” four-button system). The matches are also tag-team based. You pick two fighters and fight two fighters, tagging out at key moments to either combine moves into a combo or just keep yourself alive. If one fighter on either side dies, that team loses.

The controls seem simple at first but the game is actually deep in combo moves and includes a bit of strategy in the way players employ gem sets for added in-combat boosts. Which gems can be earned are set before play and then they are gained by completing combos and special moves that fill a “Cross Gauge,” a power meter. For example, you can have gems that boost defensive abilities, speed, etc. The idea that a well-placed gem could turn the tide of a fighting game has upset some purists and I can see why. I never quite took to the gem system. I also never found “Pandora” to be effective. It’s a new mode that can be initiated when your life meter is below 25%, allowing for infinite “Cross Gauge” but it’s timed. Kill your enemy before “Pandora” runs out or die yourself.

“Street Fighter x Tekken” includes four modes — Arcade, Versus, Network, and Challenge — but the game is heavily built around online play. Even as you’re going through the Arcade/Story mode, the default setting is that it can constantly be interrupted by an online combatant waiting to unleash his Pac-Man skills on your ass. If found that I couldn’t make it through one chapter of the story until I turned off the setting. In other words, there are a lot of people out there looking to fight. Sadly, once I did get into the story, I realized there wasn’t much there at all. This is best-viewed as an arcade/online game with unique characters and setting (including one that features dinosaurs and another that seems to take place on the back of an arctic transport vehicle being chased by a Mastodon).

As for visuals, it’s the highly-stylized, cartoonish style that fans of “MvC 3” should expect. Personally, I’m not a huge fan, preferring the more detailed fighters of “MK” or “SC V.” There’s a weight to the action missing here, including kicks and punches that don’t seem to connect and others that do when they feel like they shouldn’t. The music is your standard techno nonsense. Works for the material, but I quickly turned it down out of personal preference.

And that’s the thing with fighting games — they’re very subjective. It’s whatever fighting and visual style works for you (the new “Mortal Kombat” DESTROYS the competition for this player). One man’s obsession can be easily dismissed by another. Rarely has there been a time in video game history where there were more options in the field. “Street Fighter x Tekken” isn’t my favorite of all the choices, but I’m willing to admit that it could be yours.

“Street Fighter x Tekken” was developed and released by Capcom on March 6th, 2012. It is rated T (Teen). The version reviewed was for the PS3 but the game is also available for the Xbox 360 and will be eventually available for the PC and PlayStation Vita.

KIM DOTCOM'S RACE CAR FLICK (VIDEO)

Kim Dotcom has posted a clip to YouTube in which he re-creates a races around a track featured in two of his favourite video games: Need For Speed and Gran Turismo.
The 12-minute video was filmed at Germany's Nurburgring Nordschleife last year, but has only just been uploaded promote the alleged pirate's new YouTube channel, MrKimDotcom.
Never one to do things by halves, the giant German roped in Formula 1 champion Kimi Raikkonen, as well as his Megaupload co-worker and co-accused Finn Batato, and shipped three customised Mercedes over from New Zealand for the race - which he told media was filmed by a crew of 100 people with 30 cameras.
Mr Dotcom wins in a photo finish, proving his excellence as a driver, or at least that Mr Raikkonen knowns what side his bread is buttered:
While you're on Kim Dotcom's channel, you can also check out a clip of him playing Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - a game at which he is apparently one of the top ranked players in the world. Not bad considering it was the world's best-selling game last year, with millions of online players:
And if you've got a really solid constitution, you can watch Mr Dotcom's musical efforts, overseen by Black Eyed Peas producer Printz Board:
It all leaves NBR wondering: when did the giant German find time to run his alleged criminal empire?

COMPUTER GAME NEED FOR SPEED ON THE BIG SCREEN

Rumours are rife that the Need for Speed video game franchise has started the wheels in motion for a feature film debut.
Reports from Variety and deadline.com suggest a deal between DreamWorks and Electronic Arts for the movie rights to Need for Speed is close to being signed.
Screenwriter John Gatins, of 2011s Real Steel fame, has been linked to the project as a producer while his brother George Gatins has written the script.
Sony and Paramount have also expressed interest in the project.
The movie is expected to hit theatres in 2014, 20 years after the original Need for Speed video game was released.

As with the launch of any major gadget or technology, there have been a number of reports and rumours surrounding specifications and features.
Check out, in this brief round-up of rumours, how the PlayStation 4 (reportedly code-named "Orbis") does against the Wii U
Processor and GPU
The new PS, in order to provide the Xbox and other consoles with tough enough a challenge, is expected to pack an AMDx64 CPU and an AMD Southern Island GPU. The GPUs are expected to be capable of displaying games at a resolution of up to 4096x2160 and play 3D games in 1080p; the PS3 can only play them at 720p.

Meanwhile, an earlier report by IBTimes UK spoke of the PS4 featuring AMD's A8-3850 - a quad-core 2.9GHz processor with an integrated APU graphics chip. The Radeon HD 7670, which is the system's dedicated GPU chip, is a DirectX 11-enabled card clocked at 1GHz  with up to 1GB VRAM. The A8-3850 processor makes the APU capable of running games at lower resolutions without the help of a separate GPU.

In contrast, Nintendo's forthcoming gaming console, the Wii U, will feature an AMD Randeon-based High Definition GPU and IBM-powered multi-core microprocessor.
Display and Touch Screen Controller
The PS4, like its predecessor the PS3, will be capable of playing 3D games. The difference, however, will be that this time the console can play the game 1080p instead of 720p.
The Wii U will have a 5.3 x 0.9 x 9.0 inches controller, with a 6.2-inch touch screen running at a resolution of 16:9. The new controller will incorporate traditional buttons, including two analog Circle Pads. The rechargeable controller includes a Power button, Home button, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons. It includes a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, rumble feature, camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, a sensor strip and a stylus. The new controller can display information on its screen that does not appear on the television and the Wii U also features the combined performance of motion-sensing gameplay with full HD graphics.
Storage
The current PlayStation 3 contains 256MB XDR main RAM at 3.2GHz and 256MB GDDR3 VRAM at 700MHz. This should allow us to speculate that the PS4 will feature 1GB RAM and XDR2, the successor to XDR.
The Wii U will have internal flash memory. The memory can be expanded either by using an SD memory card or an external USB hard disk drive.
Optical Storage

The PlayStation 4 could either pack a Blu-ray drive (BD) or enforce all games to be downloaded through the PlayStation Network. The Wii U, on the other hand, will have 12cm high-density optical discs as well as 12cm Wii optical discs.
Backwards Compatibility
Sony had earlier offered backward compatibility for PS1 and PS2 games on the PS3. According to Techtorial, despite the PlayStation 3 (fat edition) which managed to support PS1 and PS2 games, the list appeared to have gaping holes and further updates did not fix the issue. The 40GB, 160GB, 320GB and the new 80GB PS3 models, produced after 2006, saw the loss of backward compatibility for PS2 games. In keeping with that tradition, Sony has apparently no plans to offer backward compatibility of PS3 games for the next PlayStation.
However, the Wii U has been confirmed as being backwards compatible with Wii games and accessories.
Used Games Technology
There are rumours suggesting the next-gen consoles will incorporate some kind of anti-used game technology. However, experts believe this is unlikely.
"We think it is unlikely that there would be that next-gen console because the model simply has not been proven to work. Remember that used video games have a residual value. Remember that GameStop generates $1.2 billion (£754 million) of the trade credits around the world without used games model. So consider taking used games out of that, you would have to find a new ways to sell the games and our partners at the console companies have great relationship with us," said Paul Raines, the Chief Executive of games retailer GameStop, in a report by Pnosker.
Always-On Internet
Microsoft's Xbox 720, it is believed, will require an always-on Internet connection as an anti-piracy measure. There is, however, no information on the PlayStation's stance in the same matter.
However, a report by Ars Technica suggests that Nintendo reportedly intends to expand its Internet video game offerings and has been talking with selected companies to expand the video-on-demand offerings.
Release Date
The PS4 was reported to be ready to debut at June's E3 trade show, only for Sony to deny such rumours, according to the Wall Street Journal. More recent reports suggest the console will debut in the 2013 holiday season.

Nintendo have confirmed the Wii U will launch sometime during autumn 2012 but the company has not mentioned a specific date. A report by IGN suggests a 18 November launch for the US.

XBOX 720 VS PLAYSTATION 4

Rumors about both the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 are making rounds on the Internet with several blogs and websites dedicated to them and their specifications. Both the companies are fighting it out even though the devices have not been officially announced and it remains to be seen what they will offer once they arrive.
Let’s take a look at how both of them are pitted against each other.
Project Development: As far as the Xbox 720 is concerned, it is broadly believed that the developers have already started to create titles for Xbox 720. Previously, the Lionhead game developing franchise had even recently posted a job advertisement where they were looking for a person with a background in DirectX 11.It is also very well known that Microsoft's DirectX 11 has not been used in any current gaming consoles so far, and the fans are guessing that titles are currently being developed for the next-generation Xbox that will have DirectX 11 support. However, nothing is known about the backward compatibility (the ability to run the previous Xbox titles) of the device.

The PlayStation 4, on the other hand, was previously rumored to have a PS universal compatibility that would let you play all the PS model games with PSP games available for download on PSN. Currently, except a few PS models, the PS3 fails to play PS2 games although it does manage to play the first PS games which is actually quite strange.
However, new reports have claimed that the PS4 might be also called the “Orbis,” which will not be backward compatible with PS3 games, and the console will limit access to used games. Sony, supposedly, will make this happen by making new titles available on Blu-Ray or for download over PlayStation Network, and will be locking the copies to individual PSN accounts. This can be a bit of shock for PS lovers all over the planet.Processing Power: If rumors are to be believed, the new Xbox 720 is set to pack in AMD's latest 6670 chip that supports DirectX11, multi-display, 3D and many others. Moreover, if Microsoft decides to wait until 2013, AMD's new HD 8000 series graphics chips will be available for integration in the new console.According to Epic Games' VP Mark Rein, the new console will have more power than 360 has with technology like Kinect built into it. Thus far, Microsoft has used a custom-developed IBM Power PC with a trio of 3.2GHz cores and an ATI GPU in its Xbox 360 which was considered to be a hot technology at the time the Xbox 360 arrived.

However, the PlayStation 4 is expected to arrive with more improved specifications that will look to challenge the Xbox. Although it was previously reported that the PlayStation 3 has a processor (or Cell) which is hundred times powerful than the Xbox 360s processor, it has also been said that the PS3 doesn't fully utilize its powers. Also the RAM and the DMA (Direct Memory Access) are actually quite poor and insufficient and just cannot support the all powerful Cell. The outcome of this is that most of the current games are first developed for the Xbox 360 and later ported over to the PS3, and may sometimes have a few modifications. Now it is expected that the upcoming PS4 will solve this issue of the processing unit making life somewhat easier for the developers and will be able to generate maximum output for the gamers.
Controllers:
It’s actually high time that Sony introduced a new set of controllers for their popular gaming console that will look a bit different from its predecessors. Currently, the only difference between the controller of a PS3 with the first PS is the color and, to some extent, wires (and also a single button added to the PS3 controller).Although Sony may have thought that keeping the same controller would be a good idea as it would be advantageous for gamers who may get confused with the new set of controllers and the buttons on it, it can be also very tiring for the gamer to be stuck with a same controller when they had expected something different from the previous ones.As far as the controllers for the Xbox 720 are concerned, there is still a bit of confusion as most of the fans believe that the controller for the new gaming console will arrive with an evolved look and more capabilities for next-generation gaming. Nonetheless, fans are sure that the Kinect gesture-control system will stay on the new Xbox console, with a revamped version of Kinect waiting on the horizon.

Disc Drive:
One of the leading rumors regarding the Xbox 720 that has been a focal point of all the talks is that Microsoft will ditch the traditional disc drive for the new gaming console. Even previously, a UK-based gaming blog, MCV, came up with the report that Microsoft would not mount a disc drive for the Xbox 720. The Redmond-based company will rather opt for an online storing option instead of its more traditional ways. The PlayStation 4 in comparison is expected to adopt the Blu-ray technology for its upcoming gaming console. Blu-ray is one of the most happening technologies around at the moment and it has, over the years, almost completely thrashed the DVD format to oblivion and has also proved to be a more expedient solution for the gaming industry. It has not only managed to make the games "HD" sharper but can also fit into a single disc, unlike the Xbox 360, where it needs a number of discs to store certain games.

Windows 8 vs. PlayStation Network: Whereas it is expected that the Xbox 720 will run on Windows 8 with Microsoft looking to add the gaming department into its ecosystem as well with an improved Xbox Live, the PS fans believe more will arrive from the network as soon as PS4 hits the market with exclusive demos and downloadable games.
